The bust of Claude-Marius Vaïsse, described as the Haussmann of Lyon

Welcome to the bust of Claude-Marius Vaisse, an emblematic figure of Lyon in the 19th century.

It was here that he led, as prefect of the Rhône under the Second Empire, remarkable urban renovation works, like Haussmann in Paris at the same time. During his mandate, from 1853, he led modernization projects, transforming the city, such as the opening of the rue Impériale (today rue de la République), the creation of the rue de l'Impératrice, today rue Édouard-Herriot and the creation of the Parc de la Tête d'Or.

In 1869, a statue was made in his memory. But with the fall of the Empire in 1870, the initial project to install it in the city center was abandoned. In 1902, Vaisse's descendants decided to sell it to be recast. The pedestal planned for the Place de l'Impératrice was finally placed in the Parc de la Tête d'Or, but without the original statue. Only the bust planned for the park overlooks this composition, thus creating a certain disproportion.

Four statues of children representing the 4 seasons were to adorn the statue of the senator. They are currently installed in the niches of the Orangerie, still in the Parc de la Tête d'Or.
