The Sabotier House – tribute to Camille Ballofy

Move to:

Welcome to the house on Rue de la Poudrière! This house, wrongly nicknamed “the clog maker’s house”, has a fascinating history that dates back to its beginnings in March 1935.

Imagine going back in time to the time when Camille Ballofy, a remarkable figure, bought this land and decided to build his own home there. But that's not all! This house was designed to be much more than just a place of residence. It also houses Camille Ballofy's study as well as the headquarters of his association.

If you look closely at the façade, you will notice unique artistic details. The bas-reliefs that adorn the house, sculpted by the Lyon artist Alice Ronjat-Sapet, depict characters dressed in traditional Auvergne costumes, surrounded by a frieze of clogs. These sculptures undoubtedly evoke the origins of Camille Ballofy, who is originally from this region.

On December 3, 1943, she left her home and remained untraceable until the Liberation. After the war, she became a lawyer at the Court of Appeal of Lyon. In 1944, she reestablished her association under the name of "Le Peuple Français", with the aim of the complete and happy development of human beings on the material, intellectual and moral levels, largely financing these initiatives with her own financial means.

By visiting this house, you are walking in the footsteps of a remarkable person, whose dedication and courage have left an indelible mark on history.
