Saint-Paul Church: 14 centuries of history in the heart of Old Lyon

21 Rue Saint-Paul, 69005 Lyon

A bit of history of Saint-Paul church

Founded in the 6th century as a monastery, the Saint-Paul church is one of the oldest churches in Lyon, connected to the Saint-Laurent church by a covered passage. It combines elements of Romanesque and Gothic architecture. Transformed into a saltpeter store during the Revolution, it became a parish church again in 1801.

Listed as a Historic Monument, its interior restoration was carried out from 1963 to 1967, and the exterior between 2001 and 2002. Its inauguration after restoration took place on October 13, 2002, during a large celebration broadcast by France 2.

Key dates:

  • 6th century : Creation of a collegiate church.
  • Revolution : Transformed into a store.
  • 1801 : Becomes parochial again.
  • 1920 : The lantern tower is listed as a Historic Monument.
  • 1995 : The entire church is classified as a Historic Monument.
  • 2001-2002 : Exterior restoration.
